Three Quick DIY Content Improvements for Your Website

Let’s face it, if you have a business in a smaller town like Fresno (really a “little big town”) you may be wondering how you can improve your website for better search engine results. The number one answer we give our clients is to allow us to improve their content. The following is a 30,000 foot view of optimizing content, but many of our clients enjoy a DIY approach to SEO before they want us to get started. Here are a few tips we give them to start the ball rolling.

CONTENT IS KING

Yes, it’s true. If your visitors don’t find what they’re looking for – quickly and easily – then you’re actually doing them (and your search engine rankings!) a disservice. Of course, the search engines know this, too. Content is extremely important because it’s a huge part of what search engines use to rank your site and let the local searchers find you. The better and fresher your content, and the more relevant it is, the better chance you have of showing up higher in search engine rankings.

If you’d like to experiment with some DIY content improvements, here are 3 quick tips you can take action on today to improve your site and hopefully your search engine rankings over time. It’s not all-inclusive by any means but it will get you involved in the basic steps of why content is important.

1. IMPROVE YOUR CONTENT
If you’re short of ideas on what to write about, just try thinking like your customers. I often recommend that you write down the top 5 or 10 questions customers ask about your business. Then pretend you’re a customer service representative answering those questions. You’ll not only find that you actually have plenty of material to write about but you may also discover several new angles to represent your products or services.

2. REVISE KEYWORD PHRASES
List the top 5-10 keyword phrases customers would use as search terms to find you. Get away from using one or two words that are too general. Since you want to attract locally, be sure to use location-specific terms such as “wordpress web design Fresno” or “custom landscaping Fresno” in your text. Assuming you have Google Analytics installed on your site (and by all means you should!), you’ll be able to see what terms visitors have used to find your site. Incorporate those terms as headlines and into the body of your text.

3. SIMPLIFY
Now that you have more quality information it’s time to organize it. Split up your content into 2-4 sentence paragraphs and add headings. The search engines prefer it and it helps your visitors find information much faster.

In essence, it’s important to make sure your site content is up to date, relevant, and rich with keyword phrases that are relevant to your location and industry.
